2023 - First event of the Year! Merrist Wood Show Jumping

Sunday 8th January 2023 we had our first event of the year and this was extremely well attended.

We had a170 entries and the day was made extremely special with a one minutes silence dedicated to our beloved Sue Seers. A memorable day with a beautiful rainbow which we are sure that Sue must have organised!

A massive thank you to competitors, parents, volunteers, jump judges, course builders, medics, it really takes a village of people for these events to happen. Don’t forget for anyone placed 1-3rd this show was a Sunshine Tour qualifier.

Congratulations everyone!

Senior Camp 2022 was held at Wellington Riding in Hook this year and after weeks of sunshine we were so grateful for the amazing facilities with multiple arena’s on a surface. We set the tents up on Sunday and retired for a goodnight sleep before the ponies arrived on Monday morning, we had a full house of 30 very excited girls!.

They met their instructors (who were amazing all week) and set off in their rides. The girls get 3 ridden sessions per day and 1 stable management session, it’s a busy fully packed agenda. We had flatwork, arena eventing, showjumping, gridwork, hacking, gallop tracks and a highlight for some was the pony swapping. It was eventful with a few unplanned dismounts on the first day but fortunately they were very good at landing on their feet !!

Evening activities this year meant getting into mixed friends groups and the older girls being team leader, my goodness they were competitive ! A very well put together quiz on the first night (thank you Fiona Davidson and Rachel Jones ), ‘It’s a Knockout” on the 2nd and 3rd nights, with space hopper races, wheel barrow races, basically a lot of giggles and falling over.

From an educational perspective we were very lucky to have Tor Fenwick bring her Grand Prix horse Millie in to do a dressage demonstration which was thoroughly enjoyable, watching a professional at work certainly gave us all inspiration for half pass the next morning ! We also had India Parker-Smith from Chukka Wellness come and talk to us about strength and fitness with a focus on Equestrian sports. It was highly interactive and tested the girls balance and core strength.

I was really impressed by the girls' care and consideration for their ponies this week. It was a tough week for the ponies and many chose to sit out a session or skip a few jumps to save their ponies for the final day's competition.

The competition consisted of Grassroots 2018 Dressage test, followed by a course of show jumps and then straight into the arena eventing, all were judged on style, rhythm and balance. All the skills we had focused on all week. There were some super dressage tests and almost perfect jump rounds, well done girls, you all worked so hard. Thank you to all the parents behind the scenes. Don’t forget your photo’s on MHPhotos.com

Some big thank you’s: Becs Seers was our ‘Chief Pony Officer’ who kept the yard ship shape with first class care of our precious ponies. Our first aiders, Anne-Marie Bibby, Rachel Jones & Fiona Davidson, with Kate Brenton behind the scenes. Our amazing instructors led by Nikki Kerr, James Turner, Helen Francis, Simon…. Tor Fenwick, Josh Hawksworth.

A final huge thank you to Sue Seers who was my amazing wing woman on this, who trusted me to run a ‘stay over’ after a couple of years of lockdown !

Saturday 16 July Pony Mag Big Day Out Mounted Games Demo

Maia, Lilly, Poppy and Milly were asked to demonstrate their mounted games skills at the Pony Mag Big Day out in front of 700 people at Merrist Wood!!

The girls did a fantastic job ! Philippa was excellent on the mic and got the crowd behind them cheering!!  The girls demonstrated a number of races such as bending, mug, sock, rope and big sack, we even got to demonstrate vaulting ;-).  It was also great to see some of our members in the crowd enjoying themselves and also cheering us on!

The girls were also treated to a meet and greet with This Esme, Harlow and Elphick eventing.

Thanks goes to the parents and helpers for getting them there, looking so smart and sorting all the equipment out.   Pony mag and the Pony Club are hoping this will encourage lots of children to give it a go and have some fun with mounted games.  If you're interested please contact Philippa Westphal or Sian Smith.

Ascot Pony Race escort role Ascot 11th April

Gemma Sinclair-Williams has previously pony raced on many occasions but in April 2022 she was fortunate enough to be nominated by Sue our DC to undertake a different role, that of escorting riders to the start line for racing at Ascot. There were twelve races altogether and four pairs of escorts . Gemma and her pair rode to the start line for several of the races and had to help nervous children, try to settle excitable ponies, and coax others who did not want to go where asked. Once each race began and the ponies were out of sight , Gemma was able to canter her own horse Dreamer the same route , from start to finish . This was an amazing opportunity and great fun. It also gave Gemma the chance to meet other older teenagers who were acting as escorts from different Pony Club branches . The added bonus was that she was able to help support some of the younger Bisley and Sandown Chase members that were taking part in the races.

Olivia has been counting the years to turn 9 to be old enough to race and finally the day came.  She was so excited but also nervous but came home with the biggest smile and said it was the best day ever!

This year's home camp will be set up day on the 4th August, with the camp itself on the 5th- 7th August. We have moved to Friday- Sunday to help with those parents who work. Everyone is expected to help with set up during the day on the 4th. Home Camp is held at our field, Dunstall Green, Chobham.

Price this year has remained at £180.

Booking for camp will open on Friday 25th Feb and will require a £60 deposit. The remaining balance (£120) will be payable on or before the 31st May. I hope this gives everyone plenty of time to put money aside each month before the payments are due. It will be limited to 30 people and strictly on a first come basis. We will hold a waitlist and if you can't make it, deposits may be returned providing we are able to fill the space.

For any newer members, Home Camp is great fun, low/no pressure, lots of learning and making new friends. It is suitable for all ages, and there is no minimum ability.

To attend, all members must have attended at least 3 rallies. Please plan ahead!

We will not be staying over, but Covid allowing, will be evening food, fun and games on the Friday and Saturday evenings.

Parents will bring the children and ponies in the morning, and must stay whilst ponies are on site. Ponies and parents then go home around 4pm and if we can, children will stay until early evening.

Camp takes quite a bit of organising and I will be looking for a few volunteers to support.

Book Here

If you have any ideas for the day or evening, please do let me know; jemmamillman@hotmail.com

I am delighted to share that dates for our Senior Camp this year have been confirmed Sunday 14th to Thursday 18th August.

It will be held at Wellington Equestrian Centre, Hook. It has outstanding facilities with almost all riding taking place on a surface. This is for pony club members 12 years and above who are confidently competing at 70cm and above.

More details and payment scheme coming soon. Thanks Jemma B

The weekend of the 25th/26th March, we had the most fantastic time, down at the pony club field in Chobham we had over 10 Pony clubs  meeting together, for a weekend of Fun and games.

Teams started arriving on Friday evening, setting up camp and penning their ponies, ready for an early start on Saturday morning.

We at Bisley & SC have been encouraging more teams in area 13 to restart games, opening our sat pm training sessions to other clubs.  Having so many teams enter at all different levels was very exciting and meant we had some super competitive teams at the top end with last year's HOYS teams and also Senior novice heats with some members having only done game for a couple of weeks.

28 teams, some members as young as 3yrs old in the mini classes , in Juniors we had fast, medium and slow heats, so catering for all levels, with guest riders and mixed teams we were able to make a place for everyone.

We were lucky with beautiful sunshine, and after a long day all settled down ready for the next day's finals.

Huge thanks to all those who bought cakes, sweets and sock race sock sets all to raise money for children of the Ukraine, we managed to raise £304.84  Well Done Everyone and Thank You.

Thank you all for so much help and for encouraging the other clubs, everyone learning about the equipment, line judging, rules and so much more.

Well done to our overall Champions!

Here are the overall results from the Sunday finals and all the Saturday's Heat AM and PM.

Dressage & Show Jumping

Scarlett, Beth and Georgia attended Champs today to compete in novice PC90 show jumping and novice dressage.
All girls had a wonderful experience, Beth finished 14th in her class.
Congratulations to you all, you shall be very proud of your achievements and getting to Champs.

Tetrathlon

Third place at National Tetrathlon Championships for Molly, Gabby and Maia. What a wonderful, well deserved achievement.
It was a hard three days of competition for the tet girls which was topped off with the usual tet party.
Well done to everyone, and a special shout out to Maia who managed a super clear on an incredibly challenging XC course.

Senior Tetrathlon

Well done to Rosie, Maia, Molly, Gabby and Charlotte who all did really well at the Senior Regional Tetrathlon at Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire representing the South of England. Only 20 clear XC’s out of 92 entries shows how tough the course was with Molly Barnard one of the clear rounds. All B&SC safely completed the course. The Senior Regionals is a step above Champs and it was great that we had so many B&SC invited by Richard Mosley to take part for Southern England. Charlotte did the 90 course clear (the others did the 100) and came first individually so we were given the video by Equireel, this shows her course but you can clearly see the 100 next to most of the jumps to see how challenging both courses were.
